Join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)!!!!!

Within the past few weeks, many of you received an email inviting you to join Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of Two-Year Colleges at Marion Technical College.  Our local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is known as Beta Nu Pi.  In order to become a member, you must have completed at least 12 credit hours of education at MTC and have a GPA of 3.5.  In addition to having access to an overwhelming amount of scholarship money, PTK membership can enhance your college experience and even look great on a resume’.  In the next couple of weeks we will be announcing a bake sale with money going toward the Salvation Army Christmas Drive (yes, Virginia, Christmas is just around the corner) and a new community service known as Project Green.  If you need more information about Phi Theta Kappa membership, please feel free to contact chapter advisor, Teresa Plummer at ext. 125  or Room 250 of the Technical Education Center.  We also welcome you to the next monthly meeting on Thursday,September 30th from 3:30 to 5:00 held in Tech Room 134.   On behalf of all the Beta Nu Pi officers and advisor, I cordially invite you to come and enjoy the fun and fellowship of Phi Theta Kappa.  Cara Burkett, Co-Public Relations Officer

  1. I received the letter in the mail, but the meeting times are hard for me to schedule with my work and children. Are the meeting mandatory or can I still help out in activities and make meetings when possible?

  2. Hi Michelle, the meetings are ABSOLUTELY NOT mandatory. We all have schedules that cannot be changed and sometimes don’t make all/any of the meetings. But, with that being said, we all can be involved in the activities. On October 27th, we are having a bake sale with the proceeds going to the Salvation Army Christmas Fund. We need LOTS of goodies to sell and people to man the tables. Thanks for the great question!!!!!!!!

  3. It says to become a member you have to have completed at least 12 credit hours at MTC. What if you already have an Associates Degree from another school and were “inducted” into Phi Thete Kappa at that school? Still have the pin and the Honors Sash I wore at graduation. Is it a lifelong membership?….Or do I need to complete the requirements to join again?

    1. Shelia, I’m not sure how all that works but, contact Teresa Plummer. Her ext. is 250 and her office is 125 ( I have it backwards in the blog). I think that it takes very little to become a renewed member. Good question!!

    2. Sheila, I am a current member and previous officer of Beta Nu Pi and I can tell you that a Phi Theta Kappa memebrship is lifelong. Even after you graduate, you’re considered an alumni member.

  4. I just wanted to let you know that Teresa Plummer’s office number is 125 not 250, and her ext. is 250. You have these pieces of information backward in your post. I thought you might want to change that and look into letting people know that so they can get in touch with the right places. Thanks.

  5. Ok, I’m a member of Phi Theta Kappa, but, I gave you the wrong phone extension and office number for Teresa Plummer. Here is the correct extension: 250 and the office number: 125. Her email address is: That is a great way to contact her. She is very good about answering her emails in a timely manner.

  6. Jessica, I thought it was lifelong but wasn’t sure. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I’ll contact Teresa Plummer and see what (if anything) I need to do besides just show up at the meeting “wearin’ the yellow sash”….Lol!

    1. Sounds great! You’re more than welcome to attend meetings or events! I think there’s a bake sale October 27th in the TEC building.

    1. Which requirements are you referring to?? The GPA is a must. Phi Theta Kappa is an Honor Society and you must have the grades to become a member. Everyone starts the quarter with an A and it is our responsibility to maintain that grade. As far as the 12 credit hours of schooling required, that is a national rule in the bylaws. Basically, you must have completed one full quarter of schooling. Once that is done, all you have to do to maintain membership is keep the cumulative GPA @ 3.5 (you do have a “grace” period if the GPA slips below 3.5) and take at least 4 credit hours each quarter. Need more info, contact Teresa Plummer at Marion Tech:
